A Grade 7 student of Brgy. Singcang – Airport NHS in Bacolod City was declared champion of the 2015 province – wide news writing competition of UNO-R held at the Mascom Studio recently. Von Ryan Magbanua bested 14 other finalists from different high schools in Negros Occ. He and his teacher –coach Rodelyn Nessia received a trophy, certificate and three thousand peso in cash. Mariel Makilan from UNO-R High School Dept. was the 1st runner-up, while Rosa Aina Marife Villacorca of Our Lady of the Pillar Academy in Bago City was second runner – up. With their respective coaches, Alon Song and Kristia Angela Geocadin, the runners-up also received cash prizes, trophies and cerificates. Before the contest, the participants were given a seminar workshop on campus journalism by Ashraf Khater, former Editor-in-chief of the university publication, Tolentine Star. The competition waa organized by the College of Arts and Sciences, English and Mass Communication Dept. Department Head Ana Liza Montaño said, “the activity is designed as venue for students to realize their potentials in writing.
