AFFORDABLE & CLEAN ENERGY

The University of Negros Occidental–Recoletos (UNO-R) is committed to advancing the transition toward clean, reliable, and sustainable energy through strategic investments in renewable energy infrastructure and energy-efficient campus operations. By integrating rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) systems across its facilities, the University demonstrates its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, enhancing energy security, lowering electricity costs, and supporting the global transition to low-carbon development in alignment with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 7: Affordable and Clean Energy.

STRATEGIES

UNO-R advances SDG 7 by:

  • Expanding the use of renewable energy through rooftop solar photovoltaic systems.
  • Reducing dependence on grid-supplied electricity and fossil fuel-based energy sources.
  • Improving energy efficiency and long-term operational sustainability.

PROGRAMS & IMPLEMENTATION

CAMPUS ROOFTOP SOLAR PHOTOVOLTAIC (PV) PROGRAM

UNO-R has implemented a campus-wide rooftop solar PV program to generate clean electricity and reduce dependence on conventional energy sources.

During the May 2025–May 2026 reporting period:

  • Operational solar PV capacity: 801.04 kWp
  • Total installed solar capacity: Approximately 1.0 MWp (as of June 2026)
  • Renewable electricity generated: 644,430.98 kWh
  • Electricity supplied from the grid: 1,917,060 kWh
  • Share of electricity supplied by solar: 25.16%
  • Greenhouse gas emissions avoided: 454.28 metric tons CO₂ equivalent (tCO₂e)

The avoided emissions were calculated using the Philippine Department of Energy (DOE) National Grid Emission Factor for the Luzon–Visayas Grid, demonstrating the University’s measurable contribution to climate change mitigation.

CONTRIBUTION TO SDG 7

UNO-R’s renewable energy program represents a significant step toward a more sustainable and resilient campus. By generating over 644,000 kWh of clean electricity and meeting 25.16% of its electricity demand through solar energy, the University has reduced its reliance on conventional grid power while avoiding more than 454 metric tons of CO₂ equivalent emissions during the reporting period. Beyond environmental benefits, the program delivers long-term economic value through reduced electricity costs, allowing resources to be redirected toward educational excellence, student development, and campus improvement.

Through its continued investment in renewable energy infrastructure, UNO-R demonstrates institutional leadership in advancing SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, while simultaneously contributing to SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
