Last May 23, UNO-R had its Urban Greening Grow-A-Heritage-Tree Day with the UNO-R @ 50 celebrations. Philippine native tree species like apitong, kamagong, yakal, mangkono and tindalo were planted inside UNO-R campus. The university invited Mr. Leonito D. Lopue, president of Lopue’s San Sebastian to join the tree planting on the said date and also invited him for tree sponsorship for UNO-R to put up a Vocational Education Program for deserving out-of-school youth and jobless parents from selected communities in Bacolod City and Negros Occidental. But, he was not able to join the event for he was out of the country. On a letter from Lopue dated July 3, he expressed his apology for the late response on UNO-R’s letter dated May 10. He stated on his letter that Lopue’s San Sebastian is willing to donate Php.50 000.00 for UNO-R’s project. Lopue will turn over the sponsorship donation during the second monthsary of UNO-R @ 50 Urban Greening Museum of Philippine Trees on July 23, 5:30 p.m., at the University Earth Chapel. UNO-R assigns the sponsorship to the Tindalo Tree, a wood used in Magellan’s Cross which signifies our history as a Filipino nation. “I believe that we do not inherit the land from our ancestors but borrowed them from our children,” Lopue stated on his letter.
